What is WAN optimization?

WAN optimization improves data transfer processes by using various techniques including compression.

Understanding WAN optimization

WAN optimization, or acceleration, can improve the performance of wide-area networks to increase efficiency between data centers and remote locations, improving the user experience. A 2014 World Congress on Computing and Communication Technologies study states, “The most common measures of [Transfer Control Protocol] TCP data-transfer efficiencies (i.e., optimization) are

  • Throughput
  • bandwidth requirements
  • latency
  • protocol optimization and
  • Congestion, as manifested in dropped packets.”

How it works

  1. Data deduplication removes duplicate copies of data before sending it over the network.
  2. Data is then compressed into smaller sizes before transmission, allowing medical images to be sent faster using less bandwidth.
  3. The method prioritizes data like live video feeds for telemedicine.
  4. Frequently accessed data is stored locally in network devices so if a doctor repeatedly accesses patient data it's available quickly.

The application of WAN optimization in healthcare

Specialized imaging fields in healthcare see the most benefit from the use of WAN optimization. Its common use is recommended for internal transmissions of these images within hospitals and practices, allowing for the sped-up transfer of images for rapid diagnostics and image processing. The distribution of these images across external networks still needs to be done through HIPAA compliant email for optimal security.

FAQs

Is the decompression of compressed files HIPAA compliant?

Yes, as long as encryption and security are maintained for protected health information (PHI).
