Trump picks Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead health department

What happened 

On November 14, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced that he selected Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his nominee for Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Kennedy, an environmental lawyer, endorsed Trump after dropping out of the presidential race. This sparked speculation of a possible role in the president-elect's incoming administration. 

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “I am thrilled to announce Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as The United States Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS)... Mr. Kennedy will restore these Agencies to the traditions of Gold Standard Scientific Research, and beacons of Transparency, to end the Chronic Disease epidemic…” 

His nomination to lead the HHS would give Kennedy authority over major health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 

What happens next 

The Senate confirmation process is the next step in Kennedy Jr.’s nomination as Secretary of the HHS. This involves hearings in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, where senators will question Kennedy about his qualifications, views on public health, and potential policies he plans to implement if confirmed. 

If the HELP committee approves his nomination, it will move to a full Senate vote. Should Kennedy be confirmed by the Senate, he would officially assume leadership of HHS, overseeing major health programs. If the Senate rejects his nomination, Trump must select another candidate.
