Traditional compliance training methods have been characterized by their reliance on passive learning techniques like lengthy lectures, PowerPoint presentations, and one-time workshops. A Global Health: Science and Practice study notes, “Interactive, case-based learning, hands-on practice or simulation, delivered in the workplace, can improve learning outcomes…Computer or mobile-delivered instruction, if appropriately designed for user engagement, can be equally as effective as live instruction.”
These methods generally prioritize sharing as much information as possible instead of engagement, inhibiting retention. A shift from these conventional methods to modern alternatives is driven by using techniques like gamification and microlearning to ensure retention.
Studies show that many employees forget what they learned shortly after completing this training. These methods also often fail to address the diverse needs of a workforce with varying educational backgrounds and job roles, making the training feel irrelevant and disconnected from employees’ daily responsibilities. With a disconnect between training material and the real-world situations healthcare workers face, there is often a superficial understanding of compliance requirements where employees are aware of policies but cannot apply them effectively.
